INTERIOR BECOMES EXTERIOR AT COSMO COUTURE 2012

Interior Ready To Become Exterior with 3rd Annual Cosmo Couture Fashion, Architecture & Design To Collide on September 20th

Imagine a dress made out of wood veneer, a fabulous frock made out of carpeting materials or a suit made out of wall coverings – these are just some creations ready to hit the runway for a good cause when the 3rd Annual Cosmo Couture Fashion & Design event takes place on Thursday, September 20th. The annual event is produced by the Washington Metro City Center of the International Interior Design Association Mid-Atlantic Chapter (IIDA-MAC).

Cosmo Couture fosters a direct collaboration between local Architecture and Interior Design firms and their manufacturing partners in the Washington DC area, to create garments reflecting a given theme. The garments are judged by a panel of DC notables during a runway show with awards given to design teams in different categories. This year’s judges include Jennifer Barger (Fashion Editor, Washington Post Express), Jhane Barnes (renowned men’s fashion designer), Karin Cadena (Director of the Fashion Group International of Greater Washington DC), Rachel Cothran (Public Relations Director at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and College of Art + Design), local fashion designer Tashia Senn, Anastasia Rurikov Simes (Costume Designer for Synetic Theater) and Karen Sommer Shalett (Editor of DC Magazine). Twenty one design teams will participate in this year’s event.

For the third consecutive year, the beneficiary for the event is My Sister’s Place - DC’s oldest domestic violence shelter providing comprehensive programs and services that holistically address domestic violence and the unique challenges survivors face. For the past two years, the Cosmo Couture event has generated over $40,000 for My Sister’s Place.

This year, IIDA-MAC has partnered with the Corcoran Gallery of Art for the event’s theme and inspiration. The inspiration is based on a selected and enigmatic painting which is part of the museum’s Contemporary Gallery titled Red Star by Raymond Saunders (1970). The artwork combines Saunders’ expressionistically worked surfaces with pop art of the sixties. Its random, yet structured composition includes powerful fields of vibrant color, calligraphy marks, stenciled numbers and a huge red star with an ampersand at its heart (painting link: http://www.cosmocouture.org/designtheme.shtml). The Corcoran Gallery of Art will also assemble all of this year’s garments into an exhibit to open on September 26, after the Cosmo Couture event. In addition, a team of students from the Corcoran’s Graduate Interior Design program will form the first student team to ever participate in Cosmo Couture.

Last year’s event attracted over 800 attendees, selling out for the past two years. This year’s event will be emceed by Alison Starling, evening news anchor for ABC7/WJLA-TV. Tickets to the event range from $80-180 and are available online at Cosmo Couture.

DC CHARITY EVENT: 25 GIRLS, 25 DAYS - @MICHINTRAINING

What does it take to make a leader?

That's the question we asked when we started MiT. How do we take smart, ambitious, enthusiastic and promising girls from urban high schools and help mold them into the leaders of tomorrow? What's missing in their formal education and training today that will help them storm the world? We searched and queried and did our market research and came up with a list of skills that girls in high schools, especially urban high schools, just are not learning. And then we designed the answer:

Michelle in Training

For the next 25 days we are asking 500 people to give $25 each to help us turn girls into leaders. We’ll be sending emails, tweets, and Facebook messages answering your questions about what, when, where, why and how MiT will work. We’ll be asking you to share our story with your friends, family, networks, co-workers, church folk and frenemies. We are asking you, for 25 days, to join us in helping take girls with promise, intelligence, dreams, and hope to the next level so that they can do anything. So that they can change the world. And while they’re at it, they can prove to the world that every little black girl, wherever she’s born, whatever her history, can work hard, play smart, learn the ropes, and become every bit a First Lady. Our Patron Saint is not an exception. She is the example.

It takes a village to raise a child and it takes an international network to turn 25 girls in to leaders. Visit StartSomeGood to donate your $25 to the cause, check out our video on Michelle in Training, like us on Facebook, repin us on Pinterest and shout it from the rooftops (or on Twitter, use the hashtag #25days25girls).

Michelle in Training is coming. Are you with us?
