Designer Spotlight: Undressing with Jean Yu Lingerie

Korean-American Jean Yu knew what she wanted to do for a living. She took to fashion design with a quickness. She created her first line of jeans at age 22.

Her intention is to design something that will arouse your sensuality. While she is renown for her dresses (RTW and bridal), her lingerie lines speaks to me. I adore lingerie. There is a special feeling you have as a woman when you wear beautiful lingerie under your power suit. You feel a little naughty.

So I totally love this line of lingerie. I was startled by the models in these pictures. It would have been a little more convincing if she would have taken the Victoria's Secret approach to lingerie models, but each piece of lingerie bearing her name is simply breathtaking. I could not decide on a favorite. See here entire clothing and lingerie collection on her web site.

Playing Dress Up

Edited by Jordana

I’m in the process of moving to New York City, just in time for Fashion Week, which kicks off in two weeks. In browsing through all the link submissions this week, I couldn’t help but tie it all back to one very important question lingering on my mind – what the heck am I going to wear? This week’s round-up speaks to the art of ”getting dressed.” We have inspiration posts from Cake not Coke and Style on the Street, style how-to’s from Denim Debutante (she was also quoted in the WSJ this week, here!) and The Coveted, and a variety of interviews. One of my favorites was Prom Mafia’s DIY for converting your boyfriend’s tee into a tunic – love it!

For those plannig to attend fashion week, make sure you RSVP for the IFB Dress Up Soiree and panel discussion on evolving influence! Special thanks to Moxsie and Microsoft Windows phones for their support!

Finding The Little Gems Fashion Challenge: What's Good @ Express.com

I decided to create a weekly post where I challenge myself to find fashionable pieces at stores where I would not normally shop. This week's fashion challenge is at Express.com. The only thing that I have ever bought out of Express was a pair of plaid capri pants that I still own. Other than that, I do not shop there. Nothing personal. I never seem to find anything that I would find fashionable there. So after perusing their site for about thirty minutes, here are some stylish goodies that I discovered:

Faux Snakeskin Bangle, $24.50

I love this bangle. It is so chic and totally on trend. The price is so right.

Zelda Skinny Jeans, $59.50

I swear by my Old Navy jeans. I have big curvy hips and thighs, so their jeans hit the mark for me. But I am always willing to try a new pair and I love the look of these jeans. I normally would buy a dark wash but I would venture to buy this lighter wash.

Sculpted Silver Necklace, $29.50

I am such a sucker for jewelry. I especially love chunky jewelry. It is the perfect companion to a plain white shirt or tee.

Purple Ruched Voile Shirt, $39.50

I like the color and the ruching of this shirt. It would look great with a simple pair of jeans and flat sandals.

Ombre Faux Croc Belt, $39.50

This belt has the most amazing blue color! I love it. It is the perfect width, too. I could wear this belt with so many things.

Wool Military Coat, $168.00

Even though I just can't make myself think about the winter, I am totally feeling this military style wool coat. It's sexy to me. Black is always in style.

Faux Snakeskin Flats, $39.50

These flats are so cute. I am a big sucker for snakeskin, faux or real. It doesn't matter to me. I wear snakeskin as if it were a neutral! It goes with a little bit of everything. Mix it up.

Cap Sleeve Dress, $69.50

This dress is so simple and elegant. Wear it with minimal accessories for work. Then add a great piece of statement jewelry, black tights, and black open-toe boots and you have a quick evening outfit.

Deal of the Day: Trendy Studded Beauty @ Spring Shoes

Looking to score a few trends as the summer winds down? Check out the Molden sandal by Spring Shoes (an Aldo Shoes brand) for $29.98.

Deal of the Day: Statement Necklace @ Spiegel

This multi-colored stone necklace is so beautiful. I have to have it. It's $34 @ Spiegel.

Without a doubt, I love shoes. I love shoes more than so many things. So the idea of shoes made especially for me, makes me so giddy. The Hetty Rose label makes bespoke shoes.

Hetty Rose is the brainchild of Henrietta Rose Samuels. Samuels graduated from the London College of Fashion with a degree in Footwear Design & Development (Cordwainers). She studied for one year under the great footwear designer Georgina Goodman. She further honed her craft by working in London and Italy for handmade shoe companies.

The thought process: Hetty Rose "is based on a theory of re-using and re-working vintage materials in a creative and sustainable way, hand making gorgeous, feminine shoes to fit." Using primarily vintage Japanese kimono fabrics, a Hetty Rose original is born. Samuels selects the most interesting fabrics to work with to ensure that your prized possession is truly a one-of-a-kind design. The designs are very modern even though the styling is vintage. The two things that I love to see combined: modern and vintage = modern vintage. Love it.

Here are some of my favorite designs from her collection:

Feminine Mystique

Edited by Debutante Clothing
The caliber of blog posts amongst the IFB members never ceases to amaze me. We run the gamut of style and fashion here. This week’s picks definitely appeal to the dueling femmes in me – the old fashioned gal and the powerful feminist. The debutante in me loved all the lovely posts about pearls including modern choices from Fashion Hippo, as well as the history of Mikimoto pearls by Fabulous Finds Gal. But nothing makes me clutch my pearls more than affordable Chanel looks by HiFashion. The feminist in me was thrilled to see smart posts about smart girls and smart fashion. Threadbared talks about academia and fashion, while 39th and Broadway explores the continuing inequality even within such a female driven industry like fashion. Enjoy!

REVIEW: Arise Magazine

I was in Barnes & Noble to get my usual fare of British and French fashion magazines and I discovered Arise magazine. Arise is Africa's style and culture magazine published in the UK and edited by Helen Jennings. Jennings is a London-based journalist, editor and stylist with broad experience and contacts in the fields of fashion, music, entertainment and the arts.

As I browsed through the magazine, I was overcome with glee. As a woman of African descent, I was proud to see that African fashion is booming. There are designers all over the Continent that are creating fabulous fashion on their own terms. Arise also contains articles on music, culture, and politics. The magazine also covers news in the US and the UK, in addition to African news. In addition to the prominent stars in Africa, the Arise team has also interviewed the likes of Spike Lee, Grace Jones, VV Brown, and models such as Liya Kebede, Tyson Beckford, Naomi Campbell. I am very impressed.

The magazine's fashion spreads are full of amazingly beautiful photography.

There was an issue dedicated to President Obama's inauguration and the impact that his election had on the U.S. and its impact in Africa.

There was an amazing article with agent pioneer, Bethann Hardison of Bethann Management. Hardison is credited with fighting to increase the number of models of color on the runways and in the fashion magazines. She represented some of the top African-American models such as Naomi Campbell, Veronica Webb and Tyson Beckford.

I learned about the Genge music movement in Kenya. The rhythm and beats of Genge has been the soundrack of Kenyan culture for over nine years.

My favorite and most inspirational article was the coverage of the Arise Magazine event that showcased African Fashion Collective at New York Fashion Week in February 2009. It was the group's fashion debut at the prestigious fashion extravaganza. Xuly Bet, Tiffany Amber, Stoned Cherrie, and Momo presented their Fall 2009 collections to the fashion elite.

The collections were well received. Fern Mallis, President of IMG and creator of Fashion Weeks said “We are very proud and supportive of all the designers who continue to understand the power of the runway, the effectiveness of producing a first-class, top notch show is the best marketing tool a designer has in this climate, and we look forward to working closely with each designer to maximize this opportunity."

So the next time you are trolling the bookstore for your favorite fashion magazines, make sure to add Arise magazine to your pile. It is a must read, especially if you want to know what's hot in Africa.

Fashion News: Target's Daily Deal

My favorite shopping habit is Target. To my great surprise, Target has instituted a daily deal. Each day, they will list one item that will be sold at a bargain price for 24 hours. You can find out what the daily deal is on their homepage or if you receive their newsletter, it will be available there. This is such a great idea. Check out Target's Daily Deal
