DC FASHIONISTA EVENT: DC Fashion Week - February 15 - 21, 2010

DC Fashion Week Spotlights Eco-Fashion, Fair Trade, Men’s Styles, Couture

February 15-21 Event Brings Designers from Around the Globe to Nation’s Capital

Washington, D.C., February 5, 2010 – DC Fashion Week will put a spotlight on the influence of world cultures on American fashion, prove fashion can be done with ecology and fair trade in mind, present an exclusive men’s fashion show, and cap the week with a mesmerizing International Couture Collection at the French Embassy.

That may sound ambitious. However, DC Fashion Week Executive Director Ean Williams said during the event’s twelfth season he wants to prove the nation’s capital can support a stunning array of fashion concepts.

“I’m really excited about the partnerships I was able to form to bring a world class fashion event to Washington, D.C.,” Williams said. “My partners include Avanni Ribbon, an organization that represents fair trade designers, the Textile Museum, Planete Chic, an elite production company, and Mei N Yu Restaurant in Georgetown.”

Fashion Week will launch Monday Feb. 15 with an exhibit of contemporary Japanese designers and a free eco- and fair trade fashion show at Textile Museum. On Wednesday leading fashion houses from Argentina, Serbia and Mexico will showcase their creations at the Cultural Institute of Mexico. That event is sponsored by Planete Chic. Thursday DC Fashion Week will host its Fashion Industry Networking Party, which has become the fashion meet-and-mingle event of the season for industry professionals.

Men’s fashion has often been just an accessory to most fashion shows, which tend to focus on women’s wear. This year Williams decided to finally push men’s fashion to the forefront. On Saturday, he will present a Washington Men’s Collection at the Crystal City Doubletree Hotel that will feature seven designers.

The grande finale of DC Fashion Week will be an International Couture Collections on Sunday at the chic French Embassy in Washington’s historic Georgetown district. That event will feature designers from India, Pakistan, Iran, Nigeria and Washington, D.C.

“Together my partners and the fashion community are helping us establish Washington as one of the fashion centers of the world,” Williams. “I want to keep attracting the top fashion houses of the globe to our area and pair them with up-and-coming local designers.”
